 Bruges, Belgium
With its' narrow cobblestone streets, medieval architecture and picturesque canals weaving their way through the city, Bruges, Belgium is a sightseer's and photographer's dream come true.
Bruges, often referred to as “The Venice of the North,” is the capital of Belgium and home to around 120,000 people. It is also a great place for anyone who appreciates architecture.Seeing the Belfry Tower is a must. It rises some 270 feet into the sky and the 47 bell carillon at the top of it chimes daily throughout most summer days. The lower section of the Belfry was built in the 13th century, while the upper parts were added in the 14th and 15th centuries. Climb the 366 steps to the top and you’ll enjoy some fantastic panoramic views of the city below.
Built between the 13th and 15th century, the Church of Our Lady is another one of Bruges attractions you won’t want to miss. Inside it is a marble scrulpture by Michelangelo which depicts the Madonna and Child.
There are several museums in this medieval town worth visiting. One is the Groeninge Museum where they have displays of Low Countries Art. This art is from between the 15th and 20th century.
As you visit Bruges you should take the opportunity to enjoy bike rides along dikes, strolls through local parks and shopping throughout the town. Bruges is known for it’s local beer and most importantly the great chocolate.
One of the best ways to experience Bruge is a boat cruise through the famous city canals. Cruises depart near Burg Square.
Burg Square is one of Bruges two medieval squares. There are many attractions within this square including Bishop’s Palace, the Town Hall, the Holy Blood Basilica and the Old Civil Registry which is one of the most beautiful buildings in the city of Bruges.
A visit to Bruges is like stepping back into medieval times. It is one of the most picturesque places in all of Europe. Allow yourself ample time to enjoy all it has to offer.
Bruges is gay friendly offering several bars and guesthouses including The Eden Rose Guesthouse which opened its doors in the summer of 2005.
